Tour Notes

Photo credit: special thanks to our client, Marco Cotton, an amateur photographer who took all of the stunning images used on this page while on his Tanzania safari in May 2016. What an incredible collection of photographs!

Flights: please note that we fly to the Serengeti avoiding the long, dusty, rough ride from Arusha.  We also fly from Dunia Camp to Ubuntu Camp, to maximize the time doing what you actually came to do – watch wildlife!  The cost of these circuit flights is included in the price of our tours.

Vehicle:  We use 7 passenger, open air vehicles that have roofs but no walls.  However, we only place a maximum of 5 people in each vehicle, which allows for the most freedom of movement for photography and wildlife viewing.  We encourage you to compare this advantage to other companies.

Extensions: We can provide you with extensions to Zanzibar and a variety of other destinations in Africa and beyond.

Itinerary

  • Spectacle of the Great Wildebeest Migration
  • Microcosm of the Ngorongoro Crater
  • Circuit flights between camps
  • Deluxe tented accommodation
  • Daily game drives to view zebras, giraffes, elephants, lions and cheetahs

Join our escorted group on this express version of our Great Wildebeest Migration tour and witness one of nature’s most spectacular experiences in a shorter time.  Two million wildebeests and zebras make their annual trek across the vast plains of the Serengeti, joined by countless other wildlife species from birds to elephants, lions and cheetahs.  We also experience the incredible wildlife microcosm of the Ngorongoro Crater. We’ve had our clients tell us that this is an experience that made them feel insignificant in the grand scheme of the world but left them with a long lasting feeling of joy.

Day 1: Arrive in Arusha
You will be met by an Asilia representative at Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer to The Arusha Hotel for your overnight.  The hotel is centrally located and is considered one of the finest hotels in Arusha.  Depending on your time of arrival you may have time today to purchase some locally made souvenirs. The camps do have small gift shops but sometimes the inventory is limited, so shopping in Arusha is often the best bet. A group dinner is included this evening at your hotel.

Day 2:  Arusha-Dunia Camp
This morning you are transferred from your hotel to the airport in Arusha, where you will board a circuit flight to Seronora Airstrip.  From there you are picked up by the staff of Dunia Camp and taken on a game drive in the world-renowned Serengeti National Park enroute to the camp, your home for the next two nights. Dunia Camp, a permanent, tented camp, ideally located between the prime wildlife ares of the central and southern Serengeti.  In May, the camp is a choice location for the migration of the wildebeest and zebra.  Dunia Camp is one of a few, if not only, camp managed and operated entirely by women.

Day 3: Dunia Camp
A day of game drives in the area to view the incredible variety and sheer numbers of animals on the migration route with time to relax in camp and take in the vast vistas all around you.

Day 4:  Dunia – Ubuntu Camp
Today you will transfer by road from Dunia Camp to the Western corridor of the Serengeti, with a game drive enroute.  On arrival at Ubuntu Camp you have time to settle in for a two-night stay. Located far from other lodges and camps, Ubuntu Camp is a mobile camp ideally located to view the Great Migration from May to July.

Day 5: Ubuntu Camp
Spend your day in this part of the Serengeti on a game drive with the opportunity to witness the dramatic river crossing as the migrating animals continue their journey.  Enjoy comfort and solitude when you return to your tented camp in the evening.

Day 6: Ubuntu Camp – Ngorongoro Farmhouse
After breakfast, you will be driven to the nearby Grumeti Airstrip where you board your circuit aircraft for the flight to Manyara Airstrip.  You will be picked up from the airport and set out on a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park, including a packed lunch to enjoy picnic style.  Continue on to the Farmhouse, which is a lodge located just outside of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, set in 750 acres of private farmland. Accommodation is in spacious cottages.  This afternoon we will go to visit an area Maasai village.  Here you will learn about this fascinating culture. You may have the opportunity to participate in a “jump dance”, try out your spear throwing skills and purchase some locally-made crafts.  The activities offered do vary from village to village so we can’t guarantee exactly what you’ll be able to do, but we know it will be interesting!  After the Maasai village visit we return to the Farmhouse where you can take a walking tour of the coffee plantation on the grounds and enjoy some of the delicious coffee, roasted on site.  The evening is free after dinner.

Day 7:  Ngorongoro Crater
Today you’ll travel into the Crater where a large variety of wildlife concentrates in a relatively small, yet diverse, area. You’ll have the chance to see lion, rhino and a wide range of herbivore and antelope. A packed lunch is provided to enjoy in the Crater with a mid-afternoon arrival back to the Farmhouse.

Day 8: Ngorongoro – Arusha
Bid farewell to the Farmhouse and head back by road to Arusha for flight departures to Zanzibar (if you book on our extension) or to other onward destinations.

Should you have a late flight today we can add on a day room at the Kia Lodge, located near the international airport, so you can relax before your departure.
