Day 1: Keflavik – Reykjavik

Following your arrival at Keflavik Iceland, transfer by the Flybus into Reykjavik and overnight at a guesthouse or moderate hotel.

Day 2: Reykjavik – Snaefellsness

Pick up your car this morning and travel north around Snaefellsnes peninsula and the westward tip of Iceland.

Day 3: Snaefellsness – Akureyri area

Today you will drive east to Akureyri or to Storutjarni for a two night stay. Either location provides an ideal base from which to explore the many attractions in this part of the country.

Day 4: Akureyri area

Visit the city of Akureyri with its fjord scenery. Head out to Godafoss, “waterfall of the Gods” and on to Husavik, a primary centre for whale-watching cruises or to Lake Myvatn, with its natural wonders and hot springs.

Day 5: Akureyri – East Fjords

Drive east to Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe and continue to the picturesque East Fjords where you will overnight.

Day 6: East Fjords – Hofn, Vik or Skogar

Turn south and west towards Hofn. In this area you will have time to explore incredible waterfalls and Skaftafell National Park. Tonight’s accommodation is in near Hofn, Vik or Skogar.

Day 7: Hofn, Vik or Skogar – Selfoss area

Head inland for today to the Golden Circle area where you will stay for two nights.

Day 8: Golden Circle

Spend today exploring the wonders of this area, from the hot springs of Geysir and the Gullfoss waterfall to the UNESCO site at Thingvellir National Park.

Day 9: Selfoss area – Keflavik

Your final day in Iceland. You have the option of making a visit to Reykjavik in the morning for some shopping, followed by a visit to the famous Blue Lagoon. Drive to Keflavik Airport in the early afternoon, return your rental vehicle and check-in for your flight home to North America. Please note, this is designed for late afternoon flight departures. Should you be on a morning flight days 8 and 9 will be redesigned to fit your needs.

This well paced self-drive holiday takes you through the highlights of the countryside. It is designed to give you enough time to stop for photo ops, picnics and to see the sites, but is at a steady enough pace to get all the way around the island in the time allotted.

Please note that this tour program may be extended should you wish to spend longer in Iceland.

Worried about finding your way around? Don’t be! We’ll give you the best possible driving directions, written by Icelanders (translated into English, of course!), in addition to a GPS in the rental vehicle and a mobile phone, yours to keep.

Vehicle rental may be upgraded to a larger size, a 4WD, an automatic transmission, a van or luxury vehicle. Prices on request.
