Day 1: Amsterdam

Today you will arrive at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport after which you will visit the Zaanse Schans. The Zaanse Schans is a small 40 house community, just north of Amsterdam, on the banks of the river Zaan. There used to be 700 windmills here at the turn of the 18th century, nowadays there are only 5 left. The area was an important industrial area and the shipbuilding industry was so flourishing that Czar Peter the Great visited the Zaan area in 1697. You will visit one of the windmills and have lunch in the area.  Dinner and overnight Amsterdam. (L/D)

Day 2: Amsterdam

In the morning you will have a guided walking tour of Amsterdam. Amsterdam is a marvelous city! The city is made up of 70 islands separated by nearly 80 kilometers of canals and connected by more than 1000 bridges. Amsterdam, which is the capital of the Netherlands, was founded in the Middle Ages and has many historical buildings. You will see the most important sights, have a boat tour through the famous canals, enjoy a typical Dutch lunch and tour the Van Gogh Museum. After time to freshen up and enjoy dinner at the hotel you will attend the WSO concert in Amsterdam at the Royal Concertgebouw from 09:15 pm – 10:30 pm. Keep in mind this day is Remembrance Day in Holland and the town centre will have limited vehicle access due to an 8:00 PM service at Dam Square attended by the King and Queen. 8:00 PM is also the time of a nationwide minute of silence.  Dinner and overnight Amsterdam. Day 3: Amsterdam

Today you will have a guided visit of the Rijksmuseum where you will see the Nightwatch by Rembrandt and other paintings by famous Dutch artists like Vermeer and Hals. The rest of the day is at your own leisure so you might want to join the local celebrations of Liberation Day (some areas might be closed to vehicles). Your tour escort is available to send you in right direction or take you for a walk. Return to your hotel on your own, a taxi would cost about € 30,00. Dinner on your own and overnight Amsterdam. Day 4: Apeldoorn

After breakfast you leave the city of Amsterdam to go and explore some of the rural villages in the Eastern Provinces. On the way you will travel through polder land claimed from the sea which is surround by dykes. You will visit Giethoorn which is known as the Venice of the North. There will be a whisper boat ready for you upon arrival which is the best way to view the farms and houses. The area has many lakes formed by the extraction of peat. Canals were dug for the transportation of peat and houses were constructed along these canals. After lunch in Giethoorn you will travel to the lovely village of Staphorst where traditions are still part of everyday life. In this village strong Orthodox Calvinist Beliefs still exist. You will be welcomed at the Museum Staphorst with coffee or tea and a local treat. After a guided tour of the museum you will have a short-guided walking tour of the village with old farm houses, residents in traditional dress and the famous dotted paint craft. Day 5: Apeldoorn

Today you will first visit the old Hanseatic City of Deventer. You are welcomed with coffee or tea and ‘Deventer Koek’, a local spice cake made in the city since 1593. You will then walk through the Dickensian streets with a guide. After the guided walking tour, you will have time to have lunch on your own. After lunch you will travel to National Park “De Hoge Veluwe” where you will have guided visit of the Kröller Müller Museum which lies amidst the National Park. It houses contemporary and impressionist works including paintings by Van Gogh, as well as a marvelous sculpture park adjoining the museum. If time allows you can have a stroll in the park or use one of the free park bikes (upon availability). Dinner and overnight Apeldoorn. (B/D)

Day 6: Amsterdam

This morning you will visit the cheese market in Alkmaar with a guide. The Cheese Carriers Guilds, each with their own color, carry the cheeses between the seller, weigher and buyer once they have thrown them on the traditional carriers. The scene is set at the beautiful old market around the Weigh House while the Carillion sounds its bells. You will have the opportunity to buy cheese, visit the Cheese Museum and have lunch on your own in the town. In the afternoon you will visit the traditional fishing village of Marken which was once an island but is now connected by a dyke. Here you will find traditional fishing houses painted in green and white. From Marken you will board a ferry to bring you to Volendam, another fishing village with a beautiful harbor and traditional houses. You will visit the Eel Smokehouse, have time to walk around the harbor, visit souvenir shops and have a chance to dress up in traditional clothing to have you picture taken (not included).  Dinner and overnight Amsterdam. Day 7: Amsterdam

Breakfast at the hotel and a free day to explore Amsterdam on your own before your return home tomorrow. Your tour escort is available to send you in right direction or take you for a walk. Dinner on your own and overnight Amsterdam. (B)
