Gorilla trekking in Bwindi, at a lower permit price — and a proper dirt-road Africa drive to get there.
Uganda is the other half of the gorilla-trekking question. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park holds roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas, permits are lower priced than in Rwanda, and the journey in — a six-hour drive from Kigali on dirt roads — is a genuine Africa experience rather than something to be endured.
Beyond the gorillas, Uganda adds chimpanzees, tree-climbing lions, boat safaris and green, hilly country that looks nothing like the classic savannah image of a safari.
