I had the good fortune to stay for a week in the remarkable, capital city of Reykjavik with my wife Margot and our son David.
Thanks to Elfa Bjork, manager of one of the apartment properties we use for our clients, we stayed in a beautiful, centrally located, two-bedroom apartment.
We had a kitchen for making light meals and snacks, which was really convenient. The views of the city were colourful and interesting, the front desk staff super friendly and helpful, and the hot tub was welcome at the end of long days of “touring hard”. The apartment building is on one of the main shopping streets, Laugavegur, with lots of stores, restaurants and cafes close by. It was easy walking distance to the “pond” in the heart of the city, right beside City Hall, and the old harbour with the stunning Harpa conference and concert hall perched on its shoreline. Friday and Saturday nights are noisy in central Reykjavik and there are people “out and about” until the wee hours, but we found earplugs worked just fine! The noise was just a reminder of what a lively and very European city this is – people here start heading out for drinks and dinner when a lot of North Americans are settling in to watch the evening news and head to bed!
We’d highly recommend an apartment if you’re going to be in Reykjavik for more than a couple of nights and would like to be able to self-cater a little, rather than eating out all the time. This style of accommodation is also great for families with children as there’s a bit more room for them to play, rather than just being in a hotel room. Seems a bit more like “home”.
All in all, a wonderful stay in a great city! Thanks again, Elfa!
