STAFF PICKS

August 21, 2024 | Pearl McCallum

It is August 2024.  Since the return of travel in early 2022 following the Covid-19 pandemic, airlines have faced staff shortages, strike action (actual and threatened), tightening regulations, and higher operating costs.  These conditions, in addition to the challenges of regular operations, can seriously affect an airline’s level of service.  …

We want to paint a picture for you.   Imagine you’re at a gathering with friends and acquaintances. It’s a fairly large group, let’s say around 15-20 people. Just as you begin to get hungry, someone brings out a large, layered cake. It’s smothered in rich, chocolate buttercream frosting – …

Way back in 2017 I wrote a blog in recognition of Canada Day; 50 Great Things Canada Contributed to the World. Since I wrote that blog I’ve been studying about the Indigenous peoples who have lived on this land we now call Canada for millennia – the First Nations and …

Saint Patrick’s Day brings Ireland and all things Irish to a lot of people’s minds. And, those of us lucky enough to be Irish or are of Irish descent, particularly so! My ancestors on both sides of my family emigrated to Canada from Ireland back in the mid to late …

There are so many things that we miss when it comes to travel, such as exploring new places, trying new things and meeting new people.  What I miss the most, are those extremely peaceful moments where you can just take it all in.  Whether you are enjoying a beautiful hike, …

Amelia’s AmaWaterways Christmas Market Cruise

February 27, 2019 | Amelia Bearhart

Wow, What an awesome time it is cruising on The Danube River. I went on a AmaWaterways Christmas Market Cruise and had a really exciting, informative and fun trip. Since I am a polar bear you can imagine the funny looks and stares I got while on the ship. I could not get over how many super cool things the ship had to offer. Read More >

Merry Christmas Market

December 21, 2018 | Margot Kalinowsky

Welcome aboard.

Hearing that every time I walked down the gang plank onto the ship made me feel so at home. It was even a warmer welcome when I was offered a hot towel and a glass of hot Gluwein (mulled wine) to refresh myself. I was on an Ama Waterways 7-day Christmas Market Cruise down the Danube River. Wow did I have some fun!  Read More >

Romantic Rhine River Cruise

January 26, 2018 | Sandra Jensen

A little bit of stress while travelling is natural, especially when your stopovers are an hour in each airport and then arrive only an hour before the last shuttle departs for the town from which you are to depart on your river cruise. Sometimes you are lucky enough to have important tour people on your flights that are with you the whole way, knowing that you aren’t the only one being delayed. Perhaps next time, I will fly in a day earlier so that I could have been more relaxed and seen some of Zurich before heading to Basel for my river cruise on the Rhine. Read More >

Venice and the Gems of Northern Italy

September 25, 2017 | Charlene Underhill

I arrived in Venice on April 5th, a beautiful warm sunny day (a far cry from what I had left in Winnipeg) and boarded Uniworld’s beautiful ship “River Countess” to begin an amazing 8-day journey delving into the delights of Northern Italy.

To River Cruise, or Not To River Cruise…

September 14, 2017 | Pearl McCallum

The relaxed pace of river cruising is one of the major benefits of this type of travel. Picture yourself enjoying a European coffee while sailing serenely down a scenic river. As you are travelling with only 100 – 200 other guests, you may experience the comforts of a luxurious ship without feeling crowded. Take in the view from the outdoor sun deck, the comfortable lounge, or perhaps even your own stateroom’s panoramic window or balcony. Staterooms are well designed to maximize space. Motion discomfort is rarely an issue, as the ship’s movement is extremely smooth. Read More >

A Scenic River Cruise

September 12, 2017 | Charlene Underhill

The all-inclusive nature of the Scenic program, while sometimes more expensive than lines like Avalon and Viking is extremely attractive. You could literally leave your wallet at home. You are never looking for small change to tip coach drivers/guides, etc. (it’s all included). No one has their hand out and service is paramount. This is also why I like Uniworld and Tauck as they operate on the same basis.
