STAFF PICKS

August 21, 2024 | Pearl McCallum

It is August 2024.  Since the return of travel in early 2022 following the Covid-19 pandemic, airlines have faced staff shortages, strike action (actual and threatened), tightening regulations, and higher operating costs.  These conditions, in addition to the challenges of regular operations, can seriously affect an airline’s level of service.  …

We want to paint a picture for you.   Imagine you’re at a gathering with friends and acquaintances. It’s a fairly large group, let’s say around 15-20 people. Just as you begin to get hungry, someone brings out a large, layered cake. It’s smothered in rich, chocolate buttercream frosting – …

Way back in 2017 I wrote a blog in recognition of Canada Day; 50 Great Things Canada Contributed to the World. Since I wrote that blog I’ve been studying about the Indigenous peoples who have lived on this land we now call Canada for millennia – the First Nations and …

Tracing Your Family Tree Just One Reason to Visit Halifax

July 13, 2017 | Lois Farley

Halifax, Nova Scotia is an appealing city with the friendliness of a small town but all the amenities you would expect to find in a modern, urban centre. Its city centre is compact and very walkable with lots of shops, cafes and restaurants, attractions, the harbour-front and loads of accommodation options, all easily accessible. Destination Halifax says this about Halifax – “An urban centre wrapped in seacoast and history – you’ll want to see for yourself!”. I think this is a pretty accurate description!

Going With the Floe – Edge

July 05, 2017 | Allison Silvaggio

After a few visits to Arctic communities in my past travels, I finally got to experience the floe edge.  And, what an experience it was!

Approximately 25 miles, just under 2 hours riding in a kamotiq pulled behind a snow machine, we arrived at the edge of the ice.  It was almost surreal… the beauty, remoteness and peacefulness. The only sounds were the gulls overhead and the sound of the water.  Where the ice stops and the open water begins. Read More >

Come From Away

July 05, 2017 | Archived Blogs

My husband and I always wanted to travel to the East Coast.

One day, we were discussing with some friends from Calgary that we need to meet for dinner. They suggested seafood, one thing led to another and we had flights booked to St. John’s Newfoundland.

Naujaat -A Part of the Community

July 04, 2017 | Oksana Szwaluk

Naujaat (ᓇᐅᔮᑦ – ‘seagulls nesting place’). Where’s that? What are you doing there? Questions when I advised family and friends of my trip. It took 3 flights to get there, but it was worth every minute.

A Bunch of Random Facts About Canada on her Sesquicentennial

June 26, 2017 | Lois Farley

It’s not everyday a lady celebrates her Sesquicentennial.  And it’s not everyday you can find someone who actually a) knows what that means and b) can say it properly!

OK, so what it means is “the 150th anniversary of” and is pronounced “ses kwi sen tenial”.  It comes from “sesqui”, meaning one and a half and “centennial” meaning a hundred. Read More >

Cycling and Cobble Stones

June 22, 2017 | Margot Kalinowsky

They say you never forget how to ride a bicycle and it hadn’t been that long ago since I had been on a bike, so I decided that doing a bike tour of Dublin would be a great idea. I did not think through the fact that that would mean that I would be riding on the wrong side of the road, through downtown Dublin traffic, and on many cobble stone roads. However, how hard can that be?????  Read More >

The Perfect Day – On an African Safari

June 20, 2017 | Margot Kalinowsky

It is pitch black. I open my eyes, but wonder if they’re actually open. That’s how dark it is. The noise of the night is even still active. The crickets and frogs are the quietest noises compared to the roars of the lions, the giggles of the hyenas, and the squawks of the Francolin bird that has gone on all night. Read More >

Under the Tuscan Sun

June 13, 2017 | Archived Blogs

Although we never saw Diane Lane, Tuscany was definitely full of colourful characters and beautiful places. We spent five days staying in a Tuscan villa, touring the wineries, sampling the local cheeses and wearing in our walking shoes on the various walking tours around Florence and beyond.
