2017 | The Great Canadian Travel Co. - Part 3

STAFF PICKS

March 14, 2023 | Pearl McCallum

We want to paint a picture for you.   Imagine you’re at a gathering with friends and acquaintances. It’s a fairly large group, let’s say around 15-20 people. Just as you begin to get hungry, someone brings out a large, layered cake. It’s smothered in rich, chocolate buttercream frosting – …

Way back in 2017 I wrote a blog in recognition of Canada Day; 50 Great Things Canada Contributed to the World. Since I wrote that blog I’ve been studying about the Indigenous peoples who have lived on this land we now call Canada for millennia – the First Nations and …

Saint Patrick’s Day brings Ireland and all things Irish to a lot of people’s minds. And, those of us lucky enough to be Irish or are of Irish descent, particularly so! My ancestors on both sides of my family emigrated to Canada from Ireland back in the mid to late …

There are so many things that we miss when it comes to travel, such as exploring new places, trying new things and meeting new people.  What I miss the most, are those extremely peaceful moments where you can just take it all in.  Whether you are enjoying a beautiful hike, …

Be Aware of the Cultural Differences

October 11, 2017 | Archived Blogs

Every country has its quirks or is known for something. Take Canada, for example. Canadians are known for apologizing, for almost everything. If you bump into a Canadian, by accident of course, they will apologize. Now, of course, this is a complete stereotype and doesn’t happen every time, but if you ask yourself what you know about Canadians (if you aren’t one), I’m sure being overly apologetic will top the list. However, when visiting Canada, this is not something that you, a traveller, are required to do if someone bumps into you. Read More >

Private Touring in Havana

October 05, 2017 | Shauna Cook

We booked an All-Inclusive package to Varadero and everyone was telling us to make sure we visit Havana! We are very interested travelers, and have lots of questions. We like learning about the people, the economy and history of a place, and sometimes like to have a guide all to ourselves! We booked a private tour for a day trip to Havana. We booked this prior to leaving Canada, however with the government restrictions, we were unable to pre-pay it, we needed to pay cash (either USD or Cuban pesos – USD preferred) on the tour day.

Everything is genuine in Costa Rica, from the locals’ smiles to the serenity that pervades everyday life in this country. All that is pure and full of life is right here in this tropical region which, although small, offers a wide variety of landscapes and climates and boasts an impressive 6% of the world’s existing biodiversity. It’s not difficult to find something here for everyone, from souvenir-hunters to adrenaline junkies.

Venice and the Gems of Northern Italy

September 25, 2017 | Charlene Underhill

I arrived in Venice on April 5th, a beautiful warm sunny day (a far cry from what I had left in Winnipeg) and boarded Uniworld’s beautiful ship “River Countess” to begin an amazing 8-day journey delving into the delights of Northern Italy.

Nice, France in Two Days

September 22, 2017 | Pearl McCallum

Edmonton to France is a long way to go for two days, but fortunately KLM is lovely so the flights were actually a great part of the trip. The connection in Amsterdam was about five hours outbound, six hours on the return; long enough to run into the city. However, Amsterdam’s airport, Schipol, is almost a destination unto itself, offering many shops and restaurants to fill time between flights. Better yet, plan a stopover to spend some time enjoying the many highlights of Amsterdam. Read More >

Travelling with an Infant

September 19, 2017 | Archived Blogs

The screams, the looks from other passengers and the concern for your child’s ears. These are the concerns, no, shall we say, stresses, that come with travelling on a plane with a young child. To those parents, grandparents, caregivers, etc. travelling with an infant, you are not alone. A lot of us have been there.

To River Cruise, or Not To River Cruise…

September 14, 2017 | Pearl McCallum

The relaxed pace of river cruising is one of the major benefits of this type of travel. Picture yourself enjoying a European coffee while sailing serenely down a scenic river. As you are travelling with only 100 – 200 other guests, you may experience the comforts of a luxurious ship without feeling crowded. Take in the view from the outdoor sun deck, the comfortable lounge, or perhaps even your own stateroom’s panoramic window or balcony. Staterooms are well designed to maximize space. Motion discomfort is rarely an issue, as the ship’s movement is extremely smooth. Read More >

A Scenic River Cruise

September 12, 2017 | Charlene Underhill

The all-inclusive nature of the Scenic program, while sometimes more expensive than lines like Avalon and Viking is extremely attractive. You could literally leave your wallet at home. You are never looking for small change to tip coach drivers/guides, etc. (it’s all included). No one has their hand out and service is paramount. This is also why I like Uniworld and Tauck as they operate on the same basis.

10 Reasons Why You Still Need a Travel Agent Consultant

September 08, 2017 | Lois Farley

In the age of online booking sites, using a travel consultant may feel like going the way of the dinosaur. But, consultants are more useful than simply selling airline tickets, trips to Disney World and cruises. Many consultants provide services or have knowledge that you just can’t get online – and sometimes, especially in times of crisis, working with a real live person is just plain superior. Read More >

When You’ve Gotta Go, You’ve Gotta Go!

September 06, 2017 | Archived Blogs

Nature calls. It’s inevitable. You can’t just go by day after day refusing to drink any fluids until you arrive at your accommodation and can relieve yourself in the comfort of your own home away from home. Whether you’re touring in Havana or backpacking around Europe, the toilet (or water closet, baño, toilette, salerni, etc.) is a necessity.
